Don’t get me wrong, technology and the advancement of it are a good thing.
But there is a phenomenon in today’s society that is actually quite disturbing on its surface if we don’t adapt or do something about it (like moderating our use of technology).
I’ve barely touched on this in my Rushed Society Manifesto, but here are more of my thoughts on our use of technology…
- Why is it people cannot talk to each other for more than 15 minutes it seems, without checking their phone or their laptop for ANOTHER conversation?
- Why is it we’ve lost the ability to get “bored”, which is actually a good thing, and sacrificed that ability so we can consume at an even faster rate?
- Why is it we don’t ask questions like “Why do I own so much shit?”… and then wonder why most of the shit we own is technology related?
- Why don’t we do something about all of this?
And finally, why do we think it is ok to become less and less human, and more and more like a machine? (read The Singularity for perspective)
Why do we think this is ok?
We are losing some of the traits that make us human folks… and gaining traits that make us the very machines we are holding in our hands (for now — until these machines are so small they can fit in our CELLS).
Maybe Ray Kurzweil is right… but why is it a good thing?
